Richmond station (London)

Richmond station (London) is a National Rail and London Underground station in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in south west London which is managed by South West Trains. It is on the National Rail Waterloo to Reading Line on which South West Trains services run, and is the western terminus for services of London Overground on the National Rail North London Line and of London Underground District line trains. The next station to the northeast on the terminating lines is Kew Gardens. On the through line Richmond is between North Sheen and St. Margarets stations.

Richmond Bridge, London

The bridge was designed as a stone arch bridge of 300 feet (91 m) in length[15] and 24 feet 9 inches (7.54 m) in width,[16] supported by five elliptical arches of varying heights. The tall 60-foot (18 m) wide central span was designed to allow shipping to pass, giving Richmond Bridge a distinctive humpbacked appearance.[17] It was built in Portland stone,[14] and ran between Ferry Hill (Bridge Street today) on the Surrey side and Richmond Road on the Middlesex side; sharp curves in the approach roads on the Middlesex side (still in existence today) were needed to avoid the Dowager Duchess of Newcastle's land at Twickenham Park.[13]Palladian toll houses were built in alcoves at each end.[13]

Richmond Palace

On the night of the Epiphany (1510), a pageant was introduced into the hall at Richmond, representing a hill studded with gold and precious stones, and having on its summit a tree of gold, from which hung roses and pomegranates. From the declivity of the hill descended a lady richly attired, who, with the gentlemen, or, as they were then called, children of honour, danced a morris before the king. On another occasion, in the presence of the court, an artificial forest was drawn in by a lion and an antelope, the hides of which were richly embroidered with golden ornaments; the animals were harnessed with chains of gold, and on each sat a fair damsel in gay apparel. In the midst of the forest, which was thus introduced, appeared a gilded tower, at the end of which stood a youth, holding in his hands a garland of roses, as the prize of valour in a tournament which succeeded the pageant!"

2 Willow Road

Goldfinger himself designed much of the furniture in No. 2, and the house also contains a significant collection of 20th-century art by Bridget Riley, Marcel Duchamp, Henry Moore and Max Ernst.

Isokon building

The Isokon building in Lawn Road, Hampstead, London is a concrete block of 34 flats designed by architect Wells Coates for Molly and Jack Pritchard. They were built between 1933 and 1934 as an experiment in communal living. Most of the flats had very small kitchens as there was a large communal kitchen for the preparation of meals, connected to the residential floors via a dumb waiter. Services, including laundry and shoe-shining, were provided on site.
