Places of interest in W1

Langham Hotel, London

The Langham continued to be a favoured spot with many high profile political figures and members of the royal family throughout the twentieth century, including Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and Princess Diana.[1] Other celebrity guests included Noel Coward, Wallis Simpson, Don Bradman, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and Ayumi Hamasaki.

All Souls Church, Langham Place

All Souls Church is an Anglican Evangelical church in central London, situated in Marylebone at the north end of Regent Street on Langham Place, just south of BBC Broadcasting House. As well as the core church membership, many hundreds of visitors come to All Souls, bringing the average number of those coming through the doors for Services on Sundays to around 2,500 every week. All Souls has an international congregation, with all ages represented.

St. George's Hall (London)

The hall was built as a concert hall for the New Philharmonic Society and opened on 24 April 1867. The Hall could be used as a theatre, however, and the first production at "St. George's Theatre" was A Woman's Whim by Walter Stephens on 3 December 1867.[2]

Victoria Embankment

The Victoria Embankment's construction started in 1865. It was completed in 1870 under the direction of Joseph Bazalgette, and was a project of the Metropolitan Board of Works. The contractor for the work was Thomas Brassey.[1] The original impetus was the need to provide London with a modern sewerage system. Another major consideration was the relief of congestion on The Strand and Fleet Street.

Charing Cross

In 1554, Charing Cross was the locus of the final battle of Wyatt's Rebellion. This was an attempt by Thomas Wyatt, with others, to overthrow Queen Mary I of England, soon after her accession to the throne; and replace her with Lady Jane Grey. Wyatt's army had come from Kent, and with London Bridge barred to them, had come via the then next Thames bridge at Hampton Court. Their circuitous route brought them down St. Martin's Lane to Whitehall.[2]
