Places of interest in KT12Walton BridgeIn 1747 Samuel Dicker, local landowner and later MP for Plymouth, obtained permission to build a bridge at Walton. It was designed by William Etheridge and built by White of Weybridge to consist of "timbers tangent to a circle of 100 feet diameter" and was built so that a single timber could be extracted and repaired without disturbing the rest of the bridge.[2]Old Walton Bridge was completed in August 1750 and acquired some fame, meriting an article in the Gentleman's Magazine, a report in Daniel Defoe's Tour in 1753 and a painting by Canaletto in 1754. The painting, which shows the rococo-style of this bridge, is in Dulwich Picture Gallery.[3]Walton and Weybridge Urban DistrictThe district was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972 and now forms part of the Elmbridge district.Thames ConservancyLock rebuilds took place at Penton Hook in 1909 and Hurley in 1910. In 1912 the Conservancy undertook major works at Boulter's Lock, which inolved the purchase of Ray Mill Island. Chertsey Lock was lengthened in 1913 and Marsh Lock rebuilt in 1914. Goring Lock was rebuilt in 1921 with a third central set of gates and Godstow Lock rebuilt in 1924. In 1927 a new lock was built at Sunbury, the old one being retained. Marlow Lock and Iffley Lock were redeveloped in the same years. In 1928 the improvement to navigation above Oxford was finally completed with the building of Eynsham Lock and King's Lock.30 St Mary AxeThe plan for the site was to reconstruct the Baltic Ex. GMW Architects proposed building a new rectangular building surrounding a restored exchange ? the square shape would have the type of large floor plan that banks liked. Eventually, the planners realised that the exchange was not recoverable, forcing them to relax their building constraints; they hinted that an "architecturally significant" building might pass favourably with city authorities. This move opened up the architect to design freely; it eliminated the restrictive demands for a large, capital-efficient, money-making building that favoured the client.[16]Fenchurch Street railway stationPlatform signageInformation by Wikipedia.com
