Places of interest in SE16

Rotherhithe tube station

London bus route 381, C10 and night route N381.

Canada Water tube station

The drum is accompanied by a glass-roofed bus station designed by Eva Ji?ičná which serves as a hub for services in the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey areas. The bus station was designed to fit in a relatively small site between the station drum, the railway's ventilation openings, a high wall and the adjoining tower blocks. Its most distinctive feature is a row of 16m (52 ft)-long roof spans cantilevered from a row of central columns supporting a 100m (330 ft)-long glass and aluminium canopy. This provides acoustic protection to the residential blocks and shelters passengers waiting below.[5]

Canada Water

The lake is named after the former Canada Dock, of which Canada Water is the surviving northern third, and which was mainly used by ships from Canada. As with much of the Docklands, the Surrey Commercial Docks closed in the 1970s. During the 1980s, the London Docklands Development Corporation took over, and invested heavily in the redevelopment of the area. About half of Canada Dock was infilled and the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre built on top of it; the remainder was converted into the present lake and wildlife refuge. An ornamental canal, Albion Channel, was created (through the site of the now filled-in Albion Dock) linking Canada Water to Surrey Water, with the spoil used to create Stave Hill in nearby Russia Dock Woodland.

St John's Gate, Clerkenwell

For many years the building was used as a tavern, the gate was acquired in the 1870s by the revived Order of St. John, and was gradually converted to serve as the headquarters and museum of the organization and its offshoot, St. John Ambulance. Most of the Tudor-style interiors, including the Council Chamber over the arch, are the result of refurbishment by Scott in the 1880s and 1890s.

St John (restaurant)

St John is a restaurant on St John Street in Smithfield, London, England. It was opened in October 1994 by Fergus Henderson, Trevor Gulliver and Jon Spiteri, on the premises of a former bacon smoke house.
