Prendergast School

In the 1970s, with the abolition of the grammar school system in the inner London area (i.e., under ILEA), the school became Comprehensive. In 1995, for reasons of space, the school moved to its present site following extensive refurbishment. The site had previously been occupied by the West Kent Grammar School, which closed in 1905 and the building was bought by the London County Council for the Brockley County Grammar School which opened in 1907.[1]

Stone House, Deptford

The building has such an idiosyncratic design that in the 19th century it was commonly known as the Comical House and several maps from the time labeled it as such. On three sides are full height projecting bay windows and on the fourth is a grand column portico which leads to the grounds. Originally the grounds extended on to Lewisham Way but now a wall separates the road from the grounds. The building is built from Kentish Ragstone, a limey sandstone dating from the Cretaceous period. This stone gives the building a distinctive, rustic appearance.

London Charterhouse

The London Charterhouse is a historic complex of buildings in Smithfield, London dating back to the 14th century. It occupies land to the north of Charterhouse Square. The Charterhouse began as (and takes its name from) a Carthusian priory, founded in 1371 and dissolved in 1537. Substantial fragments remain from this monastic period, but the site was largely rebuilt after 1545 as a large courtyard house. Thus, today it "conveys a vivid impression of the type of large rambling 16th century mansion that once existed all round London" (The Buildings of England).[1] The Charterhouse was further altered and extended after 1611, when it became an almshouse and school, endowed by Thomas Sutton. The almshouse (a home for gentleman pensioners) still occupies the site today under the name Sutton's Hospital in Charterhouse.

St John's Gate, Clerkenwell

St John's Gate is one of the few tangible remains from Clerkenwell's monastic past, it was built in 1504 by Prior Thomas Docwra as the south entrance to the inner precinct of the Priory of the Knights of Saint John - the Knights Hospitallers. The substructure is of brick, the north and south façades of stone. After centuries of decay and much rebuilding, very little of the stone facing is original; heavily restored in the 19th century, the gate today is in large part a Victorian recreation, the handiwork of a succession of architects ?
