Clapham South tube station

Clapham South tube station has a lovely aspect onto the southern edge of Clapham Common. It is one of eight London Underground stations which has a deep-level air-raid shelter underneath it.

Clapham Common

Clapham Common is an 89 hectare (220 acre) [1] triangular area of grassland situated between Clapham, Battersea and Balham in south London, England. It was historically common land for the parishes of Battersea and Clapham, but was converted to parkland under the terms of the Metropolitan Commons Act 1878.

Embankment tube station

On 6 April 1914, the CCE&HR (now a part of the Northern line) opened a one stop extension south from its terminus at Charing Cross.[2] The extension was constructed to facilitate a better interchange between the BS&WR and CCE&HR.[9] Both lines were owned by the UERL which operated two separate and unconnected stations at the northern end of main line station - Trafalgar Square on the BS&WR and Charing Cross on the CCE&HR (both now part of a combined Charing Cross station). The CCE&HR extension was constructed as a single track tunnel running south from Charing Cross as a loop under the River Thames and back. A single platform was constructed on the northbound return section of the loop,[9] and escalators were installed between both sets of deep-level platforms and the sub-surface station. The interchange time was reduced from three minutes fifteen seconds to one minute and forty-five seconds.[10]

Victoria Embankment

The project involved building out on to the foreshore of the Thames, narrowing the river. The construction work required the purchase and demolition of much expensive riverside property. The cut and cover tunnel for the Metropolitan District Railway was built within the Embankment and roofed over to take the roadway. At ground level, in addition to the new roads, two handsome public gardens were laid out. One of these backs onto the government buildings of Whitehall, and the other stretches from Hungerford Bridge to Waterloo Bridge. The gardens contain many statues, including a monument to Bazalgette. The section of the gardens between Waterloo Bridge and Charing Cross railway station also includes a large bandstand, where many musical performances are given, and the 1626 watergate of the former York House built for the Duke of Buckingham.
