Places of interest in SW8Stockwell tube stationThe station had a single island platform, with tracks on either side, an arrangement rarely used on the Underground network, and which still exists only at Clapham North and Clapham Common stations. Stockwell's original platform was slightly further north than the modern ones, and present day trains still pass through it. The other terminal of the C&SLR line was the King William Street tube station, which was only open for 10 years (1890-1900) and is currently inaccessible following the rebuilding of Regis House above it and other alterations that were made during the extension of the Jubilee Line.Vauxhall BridgeWork on Binnie's design began, but was beset by problems. Leading architects condemned the design, with Arthur Beresford Pite describing it as "a would-be Gothic architectural form of great vulgarity and stupid want of meaning",[17] and T G Jackson describing the bridge designs as a sign of "the utter apparent indifference of those in authority to the matter of art".[18] Plans to build large stone abutments had to be suspended when it was found that the southern abutment would block the River Effra, which by this time had been diverted underground to serve as a storm relief sewer and which flowed into the Thames at this point. The Effra had to be rerouted to join the Thames to the north of the bridge.[16][n 4] After the construction of the foundations and piers it was then discovered that the clay of the riverbed at this point would not be able to support the weight of a concrete bridge. With the granite piers already in place, it was decided to build a steel superstructure onto the existing piers, and a superstructure 809 feet (247 m) long and 80 feet (24 m) wide was designed by Binnie and Maurice Fitzmaurice and built by LCC engineers at a cost of £437,000 (about £34,830,000 as of 2010[8]).[19]Clapham North tube stationThe station opened in June 1900 as part of an extension of the City & South London Railway to Clapham Common one stop to the south. It is one of two remaining stations that has an island platform in the station tunnel, serving both the northbound and southbound lines; the other is Clapham Common. The original station building was replaced in the mid 1920s when the line was modernised and that building has, in turn, recently had the faƧade reclad.Harringay StadiumIn line with its property disinvestment strategy, the GRA sold the Harringay site in 1985 to Sainsbury's for £10.5 million. Two years later the stadium finally closed down. The site was cleared and in its place was built a Sainsbury's store and some new housing. The only remaining trace of the stadium is a very small area of open land to the south and east of the Sainsbury's car park, called Harringay Stadium Slopes.[15]Harringay ArenaFinsbury ParkRailway FieldsThe SalisburySt Paul's ChurchHarringay StationHarringay Green Lanes StationInformation by Wikipedia.com
