Hackney (parish)

Hackney was a parish in the ancient county of Middlesex. The parish church of St John-at-Hackney, was built in 1789, replacing the nearby former 16th century parish church dedicated to St Augustine (pulled down in 1798). The original tower of that church was retained to hold the bells until the new church could be strengthened; the bells were finally removed to the new St John's in 1854. See details of other, more modern, churches within the original parish boundaries below.

London Fields

London Fields is also now one of the centres of the London art scene[citation needed], the initial 'buzz' being fostered by the influential[citation needed] Flowers East gallery. Although this has since moved to Shoreditch, it has left a legacy[citation needed] of small to medium art galleries, often artist-run. 'The Hothouse', a studio/gallery complex which has recently undergone a major expansion, faces onto the park's north east corner. The rise in accommodation costs (partly the result of this cultural upsurge) have ironically meant that few up-and-coming artists can afford to live there, however.

St Augustine's Tower Hackney

The constant increase in Hackney's population meant that galleries were added to the church, and by 1789 it could hold a congregation of 1,000. This was still inadequate to the needs of the parish, and the vestry petitioned Parliament in 1790, for the church's complete rebuilding at an adjacent site to the North.[1]

Harringay Arena

The Arena's diversification went beyond sports and included a variety of entertainment events including:

Manor House tube station

Manor House tube station is a station on the Piccadilly Line of the London Underground, on the boundary between Travelcard Zone 2 and Zone 3. It straddles the border between the London Boroughs of Hackney and Haringey, the postal address[2][3] and three of the entrances being in the former, and one entrance in the latter.
